About The Weeknd

Abel Makkonen Tesfaye (born February 16, 1990), better known by his stage name, The Weeknd, is a Canadian singer and songwriter. He was born in Toronto and raised in Scarborough.

In 2010 he released a video on YouTube where he sang his early single “Do It.”

Two years later, he met some music executives called Sal Slaiby and Amir Esmailian. And together, they started their own company: XO’s Artist Management & Record Label.

His stage name isn’t a coincidence. At seventeen, he took his mattress and left home for an extended period of time to live with Jeremy Rose, who is his producer. The letter “E” was avoided to avoid overlapping with the Canadian group Weekend.

Under XO, Tesfaye released three mixtapes: House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence. He quickly gained a following and critical recognition from many mainstream publications because he has a dark style of contemporary R&B. In 2012, he signed with Republic Records and re-released the mixtapes in the album Trilogy. His debut studio album Kiss Land was released in 2013.
