Melissa Marie Benoist is an American actress and singer. In 2013 she had her first major role on the Fox musical comedy-drama Glee where she played Marley Rose. In 2015 she got a new role as the title character in Supergirl which airs on The CW.
Benoist’s films include the drama Whiplash, the romantic Western The Longest Ride, and Patriots Day. On stage she played Carole King in the musical Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.
Benoist was born in Houston, Texas. Her parents are Julie and Jim Benoist. They divorced when she was young. She has two sisters Jessica, who is a writer, and Kristina, an ecological scientist. They grew up with their mom in Denver after their parents separated.
She started dance classes when she was 3 years old. Jazz, ballet, and tap were her favorite. Then at age 4 she acted in a play that her aunt directed in church. She has been acting in plays ever since.
Benoist performed songs at Disneyland for three summers. She was a student at a music school in Colorado that her father ran.
She performed on a stage in many plays. She did not go to high school graduation parties. Instead, she performed the play Evita at the Country Dinner Playhouse.
